Dental Implantology is a branch of dentistry dealing with dental implants. A dental implant is a rigid metallic structure that resembles a tooth root. It is inserted into the jaw bone ( upper or lower ) in place of a missing tooth/teeth. The rigid fixture is usually made up of metal; Titanium/ titanium alloys.
Difference between dental implants and bridges.
SNO | DENTAL IMPLANTS | TOOTH SUPPORTED BRIDGES |
1. | Single missing tooth = one implant and cap. ( natural teeth remain untouched) | Single missing tooth = 2 natural teeth will be ground and you will receive three caps ( bridge). |
2. | Cost of one implant = Cost of one Zirconia bridge for a single missing tooth. | More economical ( metal-ceramic bridges) |
3. | Best esthetics | Slightly compromised |
4. | Easy maintenance | Multiple caps therefore more maintenance. |
5. | Long-lasting | May require replacement after a few years. |
